Friarage Hospital

The Friarage Hospital, which has 360 beds, has been extensively rebuilt with modern outpatient, radiology, acute medicine and surgery, obstetric and gynaecology, mental health and breast cancer units.  Whilst the hospital provides good modern facilities it has retained an individual character and maintains a strong identity within the community.  The atmosphere is strikingly friendly.  There are full support services such as phlebotomy, specimen transport systems and night nurse practitioners to ease the mundane tasks of junior hospital posts.  There is a well-stocked library, which is extensively computerised, with very helpful staff.  The adjacent postgraduate department is very active and innovative.

Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU) Following the decision taken by the Ministry of Defence to close the Duchess of Kent Hospital, Catterick Garrison, the former Northallerton Trust entered into a partnership with the MOD to provide medical care to military personnel. The Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU) was based at the Friarage Hospital from 1st July 1999.  Military doctors, nurses and scientists were fully integrated into the hospital services.

Rutson Hospital

The Rutson HospitalThe Friarage isn't the only Hospital in Northallerton, a Cottage Hospital opened in 1877 in a building known as Vine House. It was re-named the Rutson Hospital in 1905 after its benefactor Henry Rutson. It is now closed and the inpatient services it used to provide have relocated to a ward on the main Friarage site..
